GVWR Exceded, Mechanical Issue?

AF 996 on 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 Quad Cab Edit

Recently purchased a 2014 AF 996 at the recommendation of the AF Dealer. Was told by the dealer I would have no problems hauling the 996 with my 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 Quad Cab SRW, however, after reading online the last month or so various articles on GVWR, suspensions, do's and don'ts etc... I am not sure I should be hauling this TC. I've installed higher rated tires and rims (3750 lbs max), Helwig Sway Bar and stable lifts. My truck weighs 7800lbs with with a GVWR of 10100, front axle rating = 5200, rear axle=6200, the 996 weighs 4000 lbs (on sticker). The way I figure it, my truck's GVWR with the 996 is around 11800 lbs.
I called the dealer the other day and questioned his guidance on purchasing the 996, he stated I'll have no problems and has never heard anyone being ticketed with a TC for being over weight or mechanical issues from too heavy of a TC.
With this being said, should I worry about my truck failing on my scheduled trip in a few weeks?

  • The brakes, drive train, etc., are designed by automotive engineers based on the max. design loads. I.e. GVWR, axel rating, etc. You exceed those weights at your own risk. The one that would really worry me is a significant increase in stopping distance based on exceeding the design limits of the braking system. There are no after market add ones that will help you there.

If you decide to drive this rig, I would stay well behind all other vehicles.
  • its all here say. Get the truck weighed at a scale and then you will know if over axle rating............

Without that your guessing. And your #'s are mute....................
  • 1700# over GVWR BEFORE you put any of your stuff in the TC or the truck.:E
IMHO you are pushing your luck.
What weight do you have on the rear axle? I suspect you are AT LEAST 500# over RAWR.
You may have upgraded the tires, but what are the wheel ratings?

Here's another perfect example of a salesman who should be asked to put his assertions in writing!:R
