Since when does a manual transmission have a cooler? I suppose you could add a small cooler to one but not sure you would need one.

Good thought, but the problem was, no fluid, so it wasn't flowing through anything. No heat, nor lubrication.

We bought the "new" one Saturday, Hubby drove it home the two hundred miles, and the next time we tried to drive it the transmission was GONE. If you want your replacement to last any time any cooling components that had tranny fluid flowing thru them need to be replaced ... flushing just isn't going to do it and your new tranny will be lucky to make it to 30K miles before grenading again. The dealer will insist that flushing is sufficient, but IMO that's simply not true.

That car would have been processed through an auction and would have never made it off the property. These cuv with over 100k are run through the junk auction lines. Check out a manhiem auction yourself to see the debauchery. Junk lines, premium used,exotic, repo, half ton vanilla, and heavy duty truck lines.

Well he was the one that said "if anything happens I will take care of it. Well he said that he feels $800 is fair, to that I said well if that's all you will pay the fine but you owe me $1200. I sold my TT and wasn't able to fire up the furnace because there was no propane. I told the buyer that if it did not work I would pay to have it fixed and I would have paid and paid the full bill.

Any "individual" that sells a vehicle and gives a "90 day warrenty" is a idiot. A dealer, maybe a 30 day on a used car, but not a individual. I have sold many and they are warrentied until they get out of my driveway. They can take the vehicle to a mechanic of their choice for a prebuy (at their expense), but don't come back to me after the ink is dry and the money has changed hands. I feel the same when I purchase a used vehicle from a individual.
Just purchased a GMC3500 last week. Got it home and the waterpump started leaking. I replaced the waterpump at my cost and said nothing to the PO. That is business 101. My bill of sale states the same.

It could very well have been negligence on the dealer's tech - drained the tranny for fluid change and got interrupted before putting the drain plug and new fluid in - or shift change - or trusted the wash boy to finish the job - or ... any number of other things could have happened.

I would highly doubt that ANY "dealer" really, really "changes" all fluids in ANY vehicle that they take on trade or bought at auction (they might check the levels but doubt they would change them). That would be one every expensive proposition to say the least especially if you are turning over hundreds or thousands of vehicles every year.

The odds are the car was a "trade" and the dealer simply pushed it out on the lot for sale as soon as the ink dried on the sales contract...

I would still run away from this deal...

I really, REALLY appreciate the input thus far- feeling a little more optimistic about replacing the tranny, though we're still on the fence about that. The point about other possible neglect is well taken...since the car's still in our shop, good opportunity to compression-test the engine, etc.

Still on the fence about whether to repair-or-return, BUT:

The only way I can describe the dealer's performance so far is as "UNDEALERLIKE". Despite the fact that this was a "no warranty" sale, he has at no time denied responsibility for the fiasco with the transmission. Now, we both know that "warranty of merchantability" still applies, but still... is this dealer in danger of giving used-car salesmen a GOOD name? :@


He DOES have his money, so it's not like we're holding that over his head or anything. That's not to say that we haven't taken steps to contest the charge on our credit card....but he doesn't have to know that yet, and never will if things get settled in the next couple of weeks. Trust everyone, but cut the cards...right?

Here's the latest update:

His suggestion right away was to have the repairs done here, our preference as a matter of fact if we decide to keep the car. We got an E-mail back from him this morning- no problem with the labor bid. We haven't found a replacement unit we're satisfied with yet, though. It wouldn't be fair for us to insist on a rebuilt unit- all we want is what we paid for, which is one with no more than 130,000 miles on it. That's proving difficult...so far, we're finding well-over-200,000 mile trannys.

We'll see...thanks to all again for the helpful input!

This is an oddball one in a million deal. You checked the rest of the vehicle out right? It met your standards right?
Tell the dealer to put a tranny in there and call it a wash!
