H-E-E-L-L-P!!! BLOWN STICK TRANNY ON 4x4!!!!

Please don't laugh when I tell you it's a Kia Sportage 5 speed 4x4- the trailer it's intended to tow weighs less than 2,000 pounds, and
I've towed with its virtual twin over 60,000 trouble-free miles!

We bought the "new" one Saturday, Hubby drove it home the two hundred miles, and the next time we tried to drive it the transmission was GONE. It seemed to shift through the gears all right, including in and out of 4x4, but as soon as I let out the clutch to go- boy howdy! Crashin' and bangin'! Pushed 'er into the shop and finally discovered that- get this- there was no fluid in the transmission due to a missing drain plug. Nothin' much comin' out now but metal filings- dunno how she even made it home...

Anyway, dealer's being pretty good- looks like he'll make the tranny part right, but my question is:

What damage besides the transmission itself might have been caused at the same time? Would damage be confined to the tranny itself, or could other components have been affected, too?

Please advise asap- we're trying to decide whether to fix-or-force-feed-back.

  • New and the tranny is out in 3 days :H I'd be asking for a new one, no if , and's or but's. That should have been caught by the dealer in the PDI, wonder what else they didn't check :E
BTW I didn't know you were a chick, sorry for any rude comments I might have made before :R

To me it would depend on what you mean by... the dealers idea about the "tranny part". If the dealer is going to replace the tranny (100%) OK I can live with that. OR is the dealer only going to replace the part that actually broke inside the transmission, (the filings that you see draining out). IF in the later case I would a lot more investigation, because something got overheated or ran without lube and broke. Who's to say the shaft or bearing next to whatever broke didn't also get a lot of wear and just hasn't broke yet? Also to me would be the word "dealer" is a used car lot or actual dealer for that make. If used car dealer I would want it fixed and inspected by the actual dealer for that make of car. Maybe just me.

    Yup, this one...

Inspect complete, and if me, new transmission complete. No oil / fluid, not telling what kind of damage may show up later, to say nothing about long-term wear-out. I'd be pushing this dealer pretty hard if he thinks "Tranny part" ...

  • As long as the transfer case doesn't share the same fluid as the the transmission everything else should be fine. At least I would think so anyways.

If the kia has some mileage on it I would toss in a new clutch and pressure plate well the transmission is out.
  • Clutch could possibly be bad but not probable. The clutch should be inspected for wear any time that the tranny is dropped anyhow. Dropping the tranny is 70% of the labor of replacing a clutch. How many miles?
