That is when the clock starts ticking. How much tread is worn off means nothing.
Tires are made primarily of natural materials that degrade over time.
I NEVER go more than 5 years on any of my tires.
Not from when I bought them... From the date code.
Personal preference and deep pockets.
A 5 year shelf life is just that.....not installed or used or sold in 5 years from DOM then it is deemed unsaleable.
But 10 years in use from DOM is generally the norm for tires.
