As far as your gray tank no need to use black tank treatment. Just pour a quart of any lemon cleaner into tank every other dump or so.

That's the stuff my cousin used in his brand new rv this weekend. First trip and when he dumped both tanks smelled horrible. It was hot and we camped for 4 days.

Rockhill.. when you dump your tank and you smell an odor inside your rv....can you determine exactly where the odor is coming from? Not being facetious here, but it sounds like you may have a bad seal, gasket or maybe even a vent that's not working properly. Is it leaking odors from the base of the toilet, connections to the stinky slinky, drain valves.....??

Being connected to the sewer with your stinky slinky....the sewer odor may come back up the hose and into your tank....but from there (since the toilet has seals and gaskets), the odor should then go on up the vent. If, by chance, you have your fan reversed so that it is sucking air into the rv, you will definitely suck in the odors along with it. If your fan is blowing out, it can suck up odors from outside where the odors may be leaking from bad connection. Best to have the fans off when dumping.

With a normally operating system, you should not get any odors from your tanks.

A word to the wise, when traveling... dump your tanks (black and gray) and then put about 5 gallons of clean water back into them. Add to that water one cup of detergent (I use liquid Oxy-Clean...others use Dawn...or..?) and drive to your next destination. The sloshing of the soapy water will loosen and remove and residual stuff that may be hanging around inside your tanks. At the destination, dump your tanks and put fresh water back in them and use as you normally would. Repeat this procedure every time you travel. If the toilet is sealed as designed, odors will not penetrate into the rv and as an added benefit, your tank sensor will work as designed.

Another source of odors in the rv may be due to a faulty Air Admittance Valve (AAV) that is located on your sink drains (sometimes on the shower drain too). This small device can get stuck open and then allow gray tank odors to escape into the rv. They are easily replaced if needed.

I'm with rockhill. We have been in 90 deg heat for 8 days now, still no problems with smell when flushing and vent fan Is on.
I will dump tomorrow before moving 80 miles to next location. Good old "blue stuff".

I tried 2 bottles of happy camper in my 5er that sits on perminant site (which took 2 seasons to use). It failed in heat of summer Was also worried about that white crust coming out of tanks

Not so.

If you are at a place where there is no hookups and you wait till tank is full to break camp to dump there IS and can be smells from the contents in the holding tank. Add high heat weather conditions and you will have odors every time you flush.

There is NO p-trap in an RV toilet. When you flush and that blade opens it is a direct shot to the black tank. If you have a full tank, and it's blazing hot outside every time you flush the odor does come into your RV, IF you have not used a black tank odor control treatment.

I have to agree, Happy Camper is a very good product, but the source of the bad smells from your tanks may be a result of insufficient flushing, as there may still be debris residing in the tanks not getting flushed out. Technically if the tanks are flushed thoroughly, no waste tank product should be required, although at a minimum it is not a bad idea to put some dish or laundry detergent in the tanks from time to time. What I have found with Happy Camper that separates it from the other similar products we used, is it does an excellent job of breaking up the solids into smaller bits, more easily flushed out and it is inexpensive.
