Some of these heights that you guys are quoting are surprising. My Bigfoot 10.6 (with basement) on my 99 F350 Dually tops out at 11'6" including the AC. The basement is about 1' tall and my AC is one of the standard units and not low profile ones.
I know the reason my camper sits lower is because my truck is 2WD. When I first bought (used) it I was not super enthused that the truck wasn't a 4x4 but after several thousand miles, I am now okay with it as is. The 4x4 for the 99 F350s would have been the wishbone suspension that apparently rides hard and has poor turning radius. Now, if I was to buy a brand new truck, I would certainly spring for the 4x4 but that isn't the ball game I'm playing.
I think it is important to be realistic that with a $80k truck and $50k camper, your desire to do some serious offroading will probably be significantly reduced. The occasional dirt fire / logging road or sandy beach will never be a problem but with that much investment you really want to avoid situations where you risk body damage or paint damage from scraping brush.
