Hi everybody, curious if people have tried carrying firewood on a front rack. We tend to like to have a camp fire going and we've hauled peices from home as well as bought wood bundles locally and neither option is great. Hauling it in the truck or camper makes a mess and we can only haul enough for a short night campfire. Buying it isnt great either as it gets spendy quick ($50 worth last night). Thinking about adding a front rack to the dually but am curious of folks experiance having done it already. Im thinking front rack as we often tow a boat behind during the late spring/summer trips. I really see no reason a front rack cares what is in it. Some people might be concerned it could block the radiator, but I doubt it could, and you do have a temp gauge in the truck. Personally, I would put a tarp in the rack, load the firewood, wrap it with the tarp and ratchet strap it down. That insures you will not have any would falling out of the rack.Wayne

I used mine just for that last fall when the generator wasn't needed. I had the liberty of cutting the wood myself from the back yard so I cut them just the right length and used rachet straps to make sure they didn't fall out. It worked great.

I added a front receiver hitch to my class C.I then use a cargo rack that I purchased from Harbor Freight to haul my firewood.I found a used plastic trunk tool box that fits perfectly in the cargo rack and put my firewood inside to keep it nice and dry.

With all of the firewood restrictions everywhere now I would be hesitant of hauling in firewood out in the open. It certainly will draw attention.On my OFF-ROAD POPUP I have a nice location on the front deck where I usually carry my 32-inch round firepit. All out of sight and under a tarp. I always carry my first fire firewood under the round firepit which is stowed upsidedown just in case I can't locate firewood right away at the camp site.I saw one dude bringing his firewood out in the open and was instructed he could enter but had to burn it all immediately. Yeh ian wouldnt be too happy about that.I use a rear carrier on my camper and have hauled wood in there too.Also have afront but carry the honda on that.

Man, I sometimes carry biodiesel on the front rack but gasoline, yikes.
I would add I get the BD into the tank as soon as there is room.

The 'firewood' dilemma has been around since the transporting of wood pest laws came on the books. When we lived in the city, we could hardly wait to escape to a pristine camping spot and the ultimate expression of that escape was a campfire and bringing firewood along, however that came to pass. Now that we live in the country and heat our home with firewood all winter, it's not such a priority. However, on several trips with the bros., namely Mojave Road II just past, I took the trailer again with about 100 pounds of firewood and my fire barrel for those woodless camps in the desert.

The last few years, if we wanted a campfire at all, I would take my tiny chainsaw or even my pruning saw along and cut up some down and dead wood for the campfire. If you are remote enough, it works well. Not so well in congested areas. The secret is to stop at an opportune spot well before your campsite to cut and collect the goods.
I don't see me ever hauling wood on a front carrier, just like I won't be hauling six, five gallon cans of gas on the front rack (my bro does that and it gives me the creeps) I just see too high an expectation of a lawsuit when one of those pieces fall off and go thru the windshield of a following vehicle.

The one concern about stacking a bunch of stuff on a front rack is how much it may impact air flow to the radiator. For this reason, a friend I sometimes camp with tows his stuff in a little trailer.

Nope, I have not seen, nor will I (or anyone else) ever see an inanimate object that has feelings such as "caring what is hauled in" or the like.
When I see an inanimate object, I know it doesn't have feelings, so I DO understand what I see.

I have found to take everything we need for a longer stay, a ATV trailer is the way to go. I take my generators/propane tanks/extra water/gas and ofcourse,the atv's.

Don't have a picture with the camper on and the ATV trailer.

Forested areas and campgrounds are starting to not let folks in that haul in their own firewood due to concerns over tree/forest diseases. We started carrying large plastic bags to collect pine cones at camp for burning. Works great.
