Head's Up-Portsmouth Ford, Portsmouth NH

Went to purchase a new F150 at Portsmouth Ford. We had bought a previous truck there and really liked the experience. NO MORE. After looking at multiple trucks we started talking numbers. First the salesman asked what we wanted our payments to be. We refused to give him an answer. We specifically stated which truck to do the numbers on but the salesperson did them on another, less expensive truck and tried to pass it off as the other truck, them claimed he was confused. Ummm, sure. Many of the trucks had hand-written window stickers in addition to the factory window sticker as they were trying to unload 2016 & 2017 models. He then started to re-calculate based on the factory sticker, not the handwritten one. When we corrected him he said we were "wrong" so we went back to the truck in question to look. The hand-written sticker was on the seat, not on the window, so he said "sorry, it must have fallen off". Went back inside and started the numbers again. At that point he said they couldn't offer that truck at that price any more. Husband said that they should honor the hand-written price and he refused. We requested he ask the manager and he refused. So we left. We went to Stoneham Ford last Saturday, had a no-hassle experience and now have a brand new truck. Buyer beware.

Your dealer loves to hear that. No haggle to even try to do better on the price, fish in a barrel. They can go lower then employee pricing. They CAN go lower than invoice too....

Sidecar, thanks for the head's up. If you've got the number handy that would be great. I'd like to make sure I contact the correct area.

Had to consult my manual. The number is 1-800-392-3673
  • Now that would be a wasted call. Ford does not regulate how the salesman and customer interaction is conducted at individual dealerships. Ford also cannot regulate addendum stickers added by the dealership or "sale price" stickers placed on individual vehicles. The Federal law simply states that the "Monroney" sticker listing factory MSRP must be attached to the new vehicle.

The Attorney General of your state would be much more likely to be able to offer help to the consumer. Unfortunately, what you describe is not likely to cause much concern unless it is coupled with multiple other consumer reports of bad sales practices.

  • I think I'd call Ford in Dearborn and ask to speak to a customer representative. All dealerships are franchises and have to follow pre set guidelines that Fords specifies and one is no handwritten window stickers on any new vehicles.

It's a toll fee number btw. If you want, I can look it up for you.
