I observe Americans have their disposable income shortened and shortened in last decade, so they will keep the cars longer.
I still observe lot of 20+ years old cars on the road and not only Mercedes.
I semi-retired, but remember that 20 years ago, average Californian could pay living expenses for about 1/2 of his income and spend the rest on new car and vacations.
Now people I know spend 70-80% of their income just for basic needs.
When fuel is slightly less in last few weeks, bag of vegetable cost a fortune.
When Mercedes repair costs are drastic, I take advantage of that buying 3-4 years old cars for 1/4 of their original price.
But mechanics gouging customers apply not only to Mercedes brand.
Our friend just got $1800 estimate for her old Toyota steering rack.
