Heavy Duty Electric Trucks are Coming...

I saw this article yesterday. An all electric truck with a 35,000lb towing capacity and a 5000lb payload capacity. They are discussing quad cab and dually versions as well. Range (unloaded presumably) up to 500 miles. This is of course yet to be released and could likely end up being vaporware but the fact that there are companies designing these types of trucks now with release dates targeted for early 2020's tells me that sooner rather than later, these will be coming to the market.

I do love my 7.3 Diesel and I think Diesel will stay around for many years to come but the simple matter is that it now costs me $150 to go 400 miles. If I'm buying a new F350 Dually, Quad Cab, Diesel with all the trimmings from one of the big 3, I'm dropping between $60k to $80k and I haven't put a gallon of fuel in it. If I was on the road full time doing 1600 miles a month, I'm looking at $600 alone in fuel costs. At some point, it's going to be cheaper to finance a loan on an electric truck than it will be to put fuel in my 7.3. I suspect this will be the reality for many people over the coming decade as fuel costs continue to increase.

I've seen 9 Tesla charging stations in Area 51 close town.
When gas stations in town were pretty busy as there is no other convenient gas for over 100 miles, I never seen a car at charging station.
Now 35,000 lb 5th wheel would have hefty pin weight.
How SRW with short bed can handle it?
Do they run on solid tires like forklifts?
  • Just see the previous thread at why this is still a nonstarter for most of us. :D Seriously, most of us have no reason to sell our perfectly good trucks to downgrade to electric. ;)

Better watch out for Chevy as well ... testing neurological responses to their ads. https://amp.freep.com/amp/2495629002

  • $45k will get you the base truck with the lowest payload and shortest range while leasing will start at $700/month. Cost will go up as as you want more. I have my doubts about their quick charging unless they developed new chemistries and charging algorithms no one else currently has.
  • Another 2k (for 7k) in payload would be nice. I've expected electric trucks but it is slow in coming and they will likely cost more than the $60-80k mentioned.
  • Wow. BEAUTIFUL. Many will tell you that you can get an F250 for 33K+. True, but they are comparing apples and oranges. This truck and the Rivian come with gadgets in their "Base Model" that the F250 and Co. don't offer in their base models, hence it's kind of an unfair comparison. Because if you get an F250 with all those gadgets you'll pay 70-85K. Anyway. Brace yourself for the Nay sayers and the folks that will Tear it down or EV haters, LOL.
  • New question here will be, should I buy gasser, diesel, or electric.

Good looking truck except for the front. Looks like they forgot to install something.

Was also discussed a day or two ago.
  • I will not be holding my breath. My guess is this will be much like the mythical $27,500 Tesla model 3.
  • Nice trunk up front for storing your range extending generator.
