Sitting here with the current owner of the camper, which is a 90 something Northstar pop up, made in Texas. @sidecarflip, Jeff here says he puts all his camping stuff in the middle of the camper, the stuff that for us would have gone in the Suburban. That will all fit as it will be less stuff now that we won't be carrying large 4 inch foam camping pads. Tents, our typical camping boxes, which will be less now that we stow all the cooking stuff in the camper. So that will reduce it to one box.
So the design and pop top idea would work. But we are talking through it, and this particular one may have some hang ups. For one thing, it has only 3 jacks, much less 4 power jacks. So will have to price some stuff out on the improvements vs. buying something newer. Starting cheap and adding things on for what I want, or getting a newer package. Just math.
Not that difficult to take an older 3 jack camper and add corner jacks for a 4 jack camper. Reico-Titan, Atwood and Happyjac all sell kits. The bolsters attach to the camper corners with lag screws and the lower rear legs attach with a band clamp and lag screw. The front's just attach to the camper. That is, so long as the frame under the corners is sound. All fit the same way.
You have a load to learn there newbie.
Well ok then, I am not opposed to learning. And that is good news! I can get into this pretty cheap, and my neighbor has all the awesome tools and is willing to help retrofit jacks, etc. I like the idea of sprucing up the older Northstar in good shape that is here and that I know and that I can get into for cheap. The trade (or partial trade) economy is a good thing.
