When I think hard side pop up campers, Alaskans are the only thing that comes to mind.
Asking more than a lot out of a short bed half ton for one of those or pretty much any other "lighter" hard side camper with a full bath and potentially enough room to sleep 4 adults.
"IF" you get an extended cab long bed half ton, that helps your cause just a little at the expense of only having half a back seat for those 1-2 adults to sit in. Not a fun ride to AK! And you'll still be running the half ton chassis to the maxxx.
Personally, coming from someone who is hauling about 2000lbs over the "rated" payload or gvw on my truck, get a 3/4 - 1ton truck or stick with something towable if a half ton is a must.
Difference between the 2 truck models is significant. Most all half ton truck axles aren't designed to carry more than about 5000lbs reliably or for the long run. 3/4 ton axles are the same or similar to the axles under duallys, so even though the rating may appear low, it is well under the actual capability of the running gear.
When it comes to TCs unless you're going minimalist/popup/2 people, I think a HD truck is a must.
Besides, you're only giving up a little empty ride quality and a couple mpgs to have a truck that's relaxing to drive with a big white whale humping it vs burying the truck under a camper.
