Help with escape hatch cover please.

On the beginning of my last trip, somewhere along the way, my escape hatch cover over the bed in the front blew off.

The outer dimensions from the roof are about 17" x 24". I haven't seen any branding. Maybe I missed it, but that'd be too easy if I was able to find some info.

When we got back I ordered a new one from a company called hengs through Amazon. It came with no instructions, and terrible reviews. But the good reviews were from owners of a similar camper.

So, it came today and is getting sent back. It came with no instructions, I can understand how the hinge works, and is obviously too big for my application, as well as the open/close mechanism doesn't work properly or close all the way. Not even close.

Can anyone help me out with a suitable replacement, and maybe give me some instruction or explanation of how the hinge is supposed to work on the front side of the hatch?

Thanks all.
  • BTW, the hinge isn't rocket science. On the correct lid, there is a spline that corresponds to the C-shaped slot in the base. You hold the lid at a 90 degree angle to the base, and slide the spline into the C from the side. When you close the lid down, that captures it and keeps it from sliding back out.

What probably happened to your old lid is the spline degraded from UV light and tore away.
  • I have a 1999 Lance that needed a new cover. I called Lance and they sent one that was far less in cost than if it had been purchased through an RV store such as PPL.
  • I had to change the cover on my 2004 Lance 1121. If you can find out the brand of hatch, you can likely get a replacement cover. Mine was no harder to replace than the bathroom vent cover. I would really hate to have to replace the entire unit.

  • Thanks for the replies.

For now what I've got going on is dealing with getting the lid returned, and I have ordered a whole new escape hatch. I hope the one that is coming is the right size. There doesn't seem to be any standard that I can find for measuring these things. I assumed when I ordered the new one that the dimensions of the hole were the dimensions of the hatch. This could prove wrong because I obviously got the first replacement cover and it was wrong. Though I am thinking that wasn't me because the dimensions of the inner seal on that we're way off. Like 26" x 22". Bad part is that the new escape hatch is from the same company.

Also have some self leveling lap sealant on the way as well as butyl tape, for the installation. Wish me luck, and please throw out any other comments. I won't take offense if I've done something wrong. I'm learning here and I just need to get this fixed before it rains.
  • The hatch cover at the attached link is a c shaped channel. Said it's a Ventline. Looks very similar.

  • You will likely need to replace the complete vent. They are not expensive but the job will be labor intensive.
  • I don't know if you can see it, but the hinge is a "c" shaped channel that goes across the whole front.
