Alot of people full time and put tens of thousands of miles on each year on their tow vehicles. And can afford to drive the big trucks daily.
I've just purchased a 2014 F150 Screw EB 4x4 W/HD payload package. My trailer weighs 6400# ready to camp.
You make some good points. The one counterpoint I'd mention is that from what I found on lots, an F150 with EB, 4wd, Max Tow and HD Payload in a crew cab long bed configuration would run (minimally) in the $35k range. That's for a fairly basic truck with cloth seats, obviously in US dollars.
A similarly optioned Ram 2500 in the same crew cab 4wd short box configuration with a 6.4 Hemi would run in the low $30s and a CTD would run just above that at around maybe $38k. Again these are pretty basic trucks, but from what I found the cost difference between an F150 versus a heavier Ram is actually pretty minimal. The EB may be a little easier on gas but I'm actually not even sure about that - a friend of mine has had a couple and he really never got close to advertised mileage with either one (though he has loved both of them all the same).
Yeah, there's no way I could get into a 3/4t diesel for under $40K up here. Maybe a 5 yo one, but definitely not new. With them clearing out 2014's F150 because of the redesign, there is huge incentives (25-30%).
Not counting on getting the advertised mpg, but compared to my 6.0L, it will be night and day.
