Sounds like you are sold on the Lance 850. Once you've done that it's hard to change a mind, but you might look at the Wolfcreek 850 and 840. I like the 840 over the 850. Also look over the Northstar 8.5 Arrow; it's wood framed but I think it still weighs in reasonable, and it is only 7.5' wide and has to be a bit shorter due to no basement, both good options for reducing drag on the road.
I too am searching right now and I think I found both models with lower dry weights than the Lance. Towing a boat (and a Jeep on trailer) are in my plans too, and I just want to keep weight and size down for many reasons. You might do a search for Mello Mike's blog page; great info on the Wolf Creek stuff.
Once you decide on a few choices, say Lance, Wolf Creek, Northstar... Then you get into comparisons, and that is when the REAL research begins because it starts to dawn on you just how many OTHER considerations there are. Your perceived preferences begin to dissect the small differences.
My early on research indicates great quality of build with these three choices. I haven't seriously considered other brands due to various show stoppers for me like: too heavy (no slides in my case), size of tanks and how the TC will be used in conjunction with tank size and type, and the ever important "hominess" appeal. For example, Travel Lite (all aluminum campers) do not feel homey to me.
And I REALLY like the features of the Wolf Creek wet bath over the Northstar even though it's a step up bath. Think in terms of "how easy is it to squeegee and dry down this thing after a bath". The Wolf Creek is a one piece while the Northstar is caulked corners.
Good Luck!
