Hensley Hitch Set up

Hi All,

I recently purchased, and installed a second hand Hensley hitch.

I'm fairly mechanical and the install was a snap. I've read the manual a few times (I hate to admit that but I did) and it seems that the setup/config really isn't that hard.

Google searches show mostly comparisons, reviews or "should I get one?" There isn't much about the setup.

The process to setup the tension on the tow vehicle seems pretty straight forward to me, but a fellow RV'r, and former Hens owner is telling me its fairly complicated. (Hence my question to this forum)

Am I missing anything? Any tips or anything I should be concerned with?

The TT is approx 6700 lbs unloaded, the TV is a Ram 1500 with the 5.7L.

Many thanks in advance.

Chris.
  • Very easy to setup if you can follow step by step directions and use judgement. I found it hard to hit the stinger.
  • It's a matter of opinion I think. We had a Hensley with our previous RV - a 32' TT and the only problem we had was getting an exact lineup to the stinger so we purchased the Hitch Helper which did indeed work.
  • "Complicated" is in the mind of the beholder! You probably did it right. If it tows right and feel right, it's right! You did a good job. Don't over think it, just do it and you'll be fine!

Getting used to hit the stinger is the biggest headache with the HA. I found you need to grease the tapered end and it will not stick and give a problem getting it apart.

I used it with 1400# bars on a 1500 Ram, Hemi, 2004 and Jayco Eagle 322FKS of 8,000 lb loaded. Pulled great.

I have a friend who thinks the hitch hates him. I would never let a mechanical object get the best of me. I mastered it and found hitting the stinger was a simple project after several outings.

Great hitch, enjoy the safety it gives you.
  • Setting up is not complicated. Just put enough tension on the weight distribution bars to level the truck. I loved my Hensley, I say that in past tense because I now have a 5th wheel and no longer use the Hensley. I still have it and won't sell it for I made decide to go back to a bumper pull and I'll have one to put on it.
