Hey Boatycall....

Did you have a chance to visit a local DOL office to figure out the deal with the weight fee they were trying to charge for your Eagle Cap camper?

Looks like the thread you started vanished.

Just curious if your camper was in the wrong "use class" category on the title.
  • Ya, I was going to post he end of the story.

One of you had gone in because you got a notice saying you had to renew in person. JimH?

Anyway, I took a snapshot of Eagle Cap's website dry weight spec (that is wayyyy lower than actual), and took it in. Before I said why I was in there, I played dumb and just asked to renew the tabs.

They asked, "what kind of RV is it?"
I said, "a truck camper, you know, one of those small fits-in-the-bed kind".
They said, "Oh, ok, the computer said we needed to update our records".

No question of weight came up. $15.

I was pretty hot about that notice about having to get it weighed. If you couldn't tell....
  • Just got my renewal notice for $135 for an RV with no wheels that is really just cargo in my truck bed. I would be happy to be forced to go to the DMV in person and only pay $15. :B
  • Sometimes, playing dumb is the smart move. Especially when dealing with the gov.

    :):)

Good plan. "never volunteering information" is always a good thing.

This is so true when dealing with WA DOL, even the independent licensing agents that run their own business.

I've played dumb in there more than once, and it ALWAYS works out to my benefit.
  • I asked the Montana DOJ about licensing my TC in MT. Here's what they said:

"You would need to be a resident of, or own property in, Montana. We do not have a process to title and register a vehicle by non-residents.

Effective October 1, 2013 if a person owns property in Montana they may complete title and registration, in their Montana County of residence. The Montana address will need to be shown on the application and you may be asked for a paid property tax statement or another proof of property ownership.

    Thank you.

Not trying to fan the flames with this. Just sharing FACTS with those who think they can license in MT and avoid taxes.
