My activities are generally away from civilization or during snowing weather, so 4 wheel drive makes sense.
Like many, I started camping under the stars, moved up to tents ... well maybe not moved up, but different any way. I traveled over many states from Missouri East either in tent or sleeping in a truck canopy of a short bed S10 traveling to archery events.
Eventually, I had a family and did the tent transition again. This time to a travel trailer until the dw got to scared when it was her time to drive and the sway was great going down hill in a cross wind. That resulted in a trade to Class A which we traveled all over BC, WA, OR, and Northern CA. Transitioned later to a TC 8 years ago because I didn't use the Class A much with older kids, and I had a truck and wanted a bigger truck to pull my boat.
Earlier this year, I transitioned to a newer DRW because I no longer could reasonably drive my SRW to work, so the TC was loaded most of the time any way. It seemed like a reasonable time to move to a DRW from my 8 year old truck with more potential for possibly a later transition to a fifth wheel and TC combination. Of course, a F450 with a 14.5K GVWR allows more potential although up to this point, it hasn't mattered that much.
I find most of traveling much easier with a TC compared to the other types although for fast and light, it is hard to beat a small truck with canopy. I do camp at campgrounds sometimes, and when I do, I wonder if the people in the Class As and big 5vers feel sorry for us.
