For me it started with my grandpa and grandma owning a TC and some of my first memories are riding in the cabover looking out through the cabover window.
Growing up in San Diego we went to the beach and desert a lot, but always had trailers and motorhomes. My dad got his first 4wd vehicle a Nissan Hardbody and after our first trip to baja with it I was hooked on 4wd!
Adventures in baja with dad

My 4x4 Mitshubishi Montero

When we first got married our first big purchase was a 4x4 nissan xterra, we also tried the trailer thing out and were limited to mostly to the developed campgrounds.

what we really desired was that seculed, remote, and isolated spot. However the tent thing was getting old very quickly.

This is the scene that got me hooked and realized a truck camper is for me. somewhere deep in baja with beach front parking and stellar surf.

We then purchased a Toyota tundra and I was too cheap to pay the extra 3k for 4wd, (I still kick myself for that) I ended up getting a pop up camper on craigslist, which I bought without consulting the DW and had to sell it very quickly. Lesson learned, both had to go!

I learned to #1 consult the DW about everything and buy used. When meeting with one of my customers he had this parked out front of his shop and I bought it.

Another lesson learned: 4wd has its limitations...don't drive over the red clay in Anza Borrego :0
