In my opinion you're dead wrong about the Equal-i-zer hitch doing "almost nothing". I pull a 26' BH (no slide) with an Excursion (there is no way in hell that my TV isn't big enough and you won't find anyone that says its not) and I notice a TREMENDOUS difference towing with my EQ hitch vs. w/o it!
Heath,
This is not a thread about hitches, it is about trailers. The OP in my response was defending the smallish tow vehicle and large trailer with others prior to me jumping in; and, in retrospect I am sorry for trying to help. My position about the EQ hitch comes from towing on the ball and with the hitch with no perceptable difference. A well balanced trailer does not need sway mitigation and if you find a tremendous difference with the hitch you might look to other causes. I am not trying to be a 'know it all'; just posting what I have experienced with the EQ hitch. Your experience may be different and if it works for you and you are happy, that is all that counts.
Most trailers are delivered from the factory to the dealer on the ball. The delivery guys know that if 10 percent is on the tongue the trailer will not sway. Most on this forum recommend around 13 percent. So if your trailer is well balanced and you have tongue weight consistent with 10-13 percent and the hitch makes a tremendous difference, I would look to what the hitch is fixing. Something is amiss somewhere. Think about this. Your trailer was likely delivered on the ball from the factory and that might have been hundreds or thousands of miles with no issues. Why now does the hitch make a tremendous difference especially on your heavy duty stout tow vehicle? - HeathJohnsonExplorerIn my opinion you're dead wrong about the Equal-i-zer hitch doing "almost nothing". What an insulting thing to say. You know you didn't try to help anything. You are just trying to pick a fight. Another rv.net know it all.
Camper Dave,
I had no intention of picking a fight. I was only refering to the Equalizer hitch, not the OP's towing abilities or experience. I have experience with the Equalizer four point hitch and have not found it to be a good sway mitigation product. That is why I referenced that most that tow with an Equalizer need or have a well balanced trailer anyway and the hitch really does nothing or almost nothing. The Equalizer hitch simply does not measure up to hitches that have independent sway features like the Hensley, ProPride or PullRite. Had the OP discussed using a premium hitch I would not have commented. If I picked a fight, that I did not, it would have been with the hitch not the OP. In response, the OP decided to be condenscending in his comments back to me. I guess he misread what I wrote and thought I was taking aim at his experience and abilities. If you re-read what I originally wrote, I said nothing about the OP, only that the Equalizer hitch is a bandaid. So who am I picking a fight with? a hitch? I certainly did not mean to insult NLP racing but can only think that anybody that posts on any forum expects responses. Being thin skinned on this forum just doesn't work. His repsonse to me was the insult, not my suggestions to him. - camperdaveExplorer

No kidding, thanks Mr. Towing Expert. BTW, it towed okay as pictured, but tows even better with my properly adjusted "band-aid". Just because I don't have a 3/4 ton pickup doesn't mean that my Expedition is not a good tow vehicle nor does it make it an unbalanced tow vehicle/trailer combination. This is not my first time to tow a trailer, jeesh...
Your welcome, glad I was able to help! That is what we are all here for. To help each other.
