The Ford F 150 with the EcoBoost V6 has been around for some time now. Enough time for some high miles to accumulate.
My question is for owners of F 150's with the EcoBoost V6.
- Do you use your truck for towing or no towing...just a daily driver ? [COLOR=] I use the truck for both daily use and towing my 8,000 lb. trailer (10,000 plus total load against tow rating)
- How many miles have you accumulated ? The first year I put on about 18,000 miles with approximately 6,000 towing the trailer. SINCE then, for personal reasons not related to the truck, I have added only an additional 12,000 miles with only about 1,000 of that being towing.
- Have you had any issues with it ?Yes. When I first picked it up I got a check engine light within only a few miles. Discovered there was a loos line to the intercooler but I purchased before they even had manuals out to the dealers. Had to have a factory rep from KC come in to tighten this screw. I've zero issues since then and love the truck. Now has a total of 35,000 miles so I'm only 65,000 more miles on the warranty :)
- Were these issues reoccurring a number of times or just once ? That is the ONLY issue I"ve had with the truck other than a bead leak on the wheels I purchased from a third party vendor. I KNOW Ford makes some nice looking wheels for the HD truck but my dealership couldn't find them anywhere so I purchased from a local tire store (even the WHEELS from China "blow out :B
- Do you feel that smaller turbocharged gas engines in both half tons and eventually heavier duty pickups will be the future ? I really have no idea but can't think of any reason why not. Can't beat the torque and power. The ONLY drawback to using them in larger trucks might be the lack of engine compression for braking purposes. Not quite as much as the older V8s had. Certainly not an issue for up to their maximum rating of 11,300 lb. trailer weight though. If so why, if not, why not ?
- Would you buy another turbocharged gas truck? Yes but NOT solely because of the gas turbo. It would also have to include the REST of the package (large payload, high torque and adequate horsepower to handle it's maximum trailer weight easily under all towing conditions). Having better fuel mileage would be a bonus bur NOT at the expense of torque or power.
My personal opinion is that the F 150 Turbocharged gas V6 has generally been relatively trouble free and has proved itself. I agree with that statement.
I think it maybe the model for truck of the future. The jury is out on the new F 150 with the 2.7 liter turbo gas V6 engine....because to me how small can you go for a truck engine...even though it's turbocharged. Ford has far too much at stake to NOT have tested it's capability. The exact same thing was said about the 3.5 liter V6 Ecoboost.
The only issue I've heard is that some had some problems with moisture in the turbos...don't think this was exactly it...but something did cause some issues. Haven't heard much about it, so I assume that the fix was made and the issue became a non issue. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Probably the same issue but Ford purchased a few trucks back from owners for an engine misfire that they could not diagnose. I never heard what was ultimately found to be the issue but it was only a tiny fraction of one percent of the total sold.
I've followed the F 150 EcoBoost V6 since it's introduction. I think it has and or will.... play a very significant part in the evolution of the modern light and possibly heavier duty P/U.
What's your view ? Love the truck and REALLY love the fact that it'll
pull like CRAZY without sounding like it's struggling up every rise in the highway (as my diesel always did). I'm just not one that needs balloons tied to my wheels to make noise that isn't doing anything for my power or performance. I can speak in a soft speaking voice at 70 MPH up a 6% grade and all I hear is a little hum from the turbos.
Thanks for the very thorough post. I'm looking forward to reviews of the new 2.7 liter turbo V6 in an F 150.
I'm also wondering if Ford will bring out a turbocharged version of the 5 liter Coyote V8 as an option for the F 250.
I also wonder if Ford will bring out an small turbodiesel for the F 150...similar to the Dodge 1500 TD. It would be interesting to see a comparison test between these two.
I realize the F 150 ecoboost V6 has a HP advantage.
