High miles F 150 EcoBoost V6

The Ford F 150 with the EcoBoost V6 has been around for some time now. Enough time for some high miles to accumulate.

My question is for owners of F 150's with the EcoBoost V6.

  • Do you use your truck for towing or no towing...just a daily driver ?
  • How many miles have you accumulated ?
  • Have you had any issues with it ?
  • Were these issues reoccurring a number of times or just once ?
  • Do you feel that smaller turbocharged gas engines in both half tons and eventually heavier duty pickups will be the future ? If so why, if not, why not ?
  • Would you buy another turbocharged gas truck?

My personal opinion is that the F 150 Turbocharged gas V6 has generally been relatively trouble free and has proved itself.

I think it maybe the model for truck of the future. The jury is out on the new F 150 with the 2.7 liter turbo gas V6 engine....because to me how small can you go for a truck engine...even though it's turbocharged.

The only issue I've heard is that some had some problems with moisture in the turbos...don't think this was exactly it...but something did cause some issues. Haven't heard much about it, so I assume that the fix was made and the issue became a non issue. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I've followed the F 150 EcoBoost V6 since it's introduction. I think it has and or will.... play a very significant part in the evolution of the modern light and possibly heavier duty P/U.

What's your view ?

I have about 30k miles, about 1/3 of this towing a 5k TT over the past two summers. No issues to date, gets decent mileage non-towing (25 mpg Hwy) and starts at -30C (-20F) like it's summertime. Had a long day of towing thru ID over White Bird Pass & Lewiston Hill at 95°F. The truck maintained 65 mph in 4th gear on both climbs and didn't break a sweat. Admittedly, I don't have a large TT but with more truck than I need it is nice to set the cruise and sit back and enjoy the trip. No regrets, I would buy another one.

How the heck do you get 25mpg with an EB, 4wd and MaxTow which has the 3.73 gears when a 2wd EB with 3.15 gears is rated at 21mpg?
Maybe that's why the EB is nicknamed the EgoBoost.

I think he is putting "Queens gallons" in his tank. They get a little more gallons from their gallons than we do. :) But then again they have to pay 80K for a pickup too. :E
  • We have one for K9 duty. It's not what I would classify as "high miles", but it does get driven hard daily, and idled for extended periods...daily (to keep the pooch warm). No major issues so far. Same engine in our two Traffic Taurus police vehicles (both AWD). I absolutely love driving them.

I will be sure to report if they have any mojor issues - especially if they are common issues among the three as that would indicate a "weak spot". So far so good.

He ends up at a Ford dealer, gets a new F150. I tell him I've been reading rave reviews about the eco boost motor. He rolls his eyes, tells me thats what he has. And while it is fast (drag race type fast) He is disappointed with the MPGs, when hauling or running empty. He was saying 13 around town, and 15 to 17 on the hwy empty. Hwy towing was 12 to 14mpg.

Sounds to me like the guy likes to drive with a lead foot and drives lots of short distances.

My truck's overall average for 9,000 miles has been 17.2 mpg according to the truck computer. Only about 600 miles of that has been towing. I expect the average to drop considerably since I'm leaving for a 3,000 mile plus trip with the trailer later this week. When I have calculated mpg manually, it has always come out within 0.5 mpg of what the truck computer says. My truck gets 21 mpg at 55 mph on the highway in gentle terrain. Bump the speed to 72-75 and it drops to 18. Typical commute for me of 7 miles each way(2 miles in town, 5 miles hwy at 60 mph) yields 17 mpg. Pulling the trailer, driving about 60, it gets about 10.

I can't answer all the OPs questions, since mine only has about 9,000 miles, but I'm very pleased so far. I traded in a 2008 Chevy 5.3 and the EcoBoost pulls way better, while achieving slightly better mpg.

I had the moisture in the intercooler issue one time when I had been driving at a steady speed in the rain for a couple of hours and decided to punch it to see if it would happen. It did. I took it to the dealer, they reflashed the computer and I have been unable to duplicate the failure since, and I have tried.
  • I went to get my propane tanks filled the other day, little mom and pop shop in Flint Mich. I go in the office to pay, the owner of the place takes my money, then looks outside, for any of "his guys" to fill my tanks. When he fails to see anyone, he just shrugs and says he do it himself.

As he walks out, get stops at my truck (2003 GMC HD 2500 Dmax Alli), puts his arm on the door frame of the drivers door, and leans against it. "Oh how I miss my HD!" he says.

This leads to a whole conversation about how he leased one, when the lease was up, the dealer wouldn't deal, diesels were selling well, and they would not give him the discont he wanted.

And it will not pull as well as he would like.

He closed the conversation by saying when the lease on the F150 is up, he'll gladly turn it in, and head back to a GM dealer.

This place of business is a propane store, and storage lot. They also winterize boats and RV's prior to storage. Lots of heavy objects being moved around!

I do believe turbo chargers are the next level in technology, and will continue to purchase vechicles that are equipped with them, my Dmax has one, as does the Chevy Sonic my son drives.

The new Cadillac twin turbo mote is getting rave reviews.

Well mileage has as much to do with driving style, as gearing and 4X2 or 4X4. It also has to do with speed. I see no reason to believe that some one can get 25 mpg driving 55 to 60 mph on the highway with a curb weight of just under 5,000# to about 5,700#. I can get 20 mph with my 7,800# Ram at 65mph.

I have stated before I think Ford hit a Home Run with the EB F150, good power with light weight.
Not too sure about the 2.7 liter EB, in a full size PU, while not a direct injected engine, my DW PT Cruiser 2.4 liter turbo, does get up and move, I see that engine as a engine for a Grocery getter/weekend light hauler.

It should not be referred to as THE F150, but as the F150's seeing how the F150 has no less than 20 GVWRs, 6,400 to 8,200, and 23 GCVWRs, from 10,400 up to 17,100!!

I would think that these numbers could be paired down a bit. Sure would be easier on both the buyer and salesperson.

I would love to see some high mileage EB reports, over 150,000 to 200,000K I do realize that it is likely a bit early to bee seeing those, but likely in the next couple of years.

  • They had problems with injector failures and overheating but Ford seemed to have gotten on top of those issues during the second year.
The same technology is working out well in their sport-utes and passenger cars as well. Time will tell how well they hold up with lots of miles but if they used the right stuff then they should fare well.
  • I think it has been one of the most successful launches ever for Ford and they have sold a bunch of them.
