Dec 27, 2016What you are concerned with is the weight carrying capacity of the receiver on the truck. This is the maximum amount of weight the hitch can carry without distributing weight. Exceeding this rating can result in a catastrophic failure of the hitch.
You'd be surprised how little weight hitches can carry. For example, the factory hitch that came with your 2000 F250 can only carry 500 lbs. These days 3/4 and 1 tons come with higher ratings, but not by much. A F350 today comes with a hitch rated at 850 lbs. Sounds strange, but a WDH could be necessary for a F350 with a 6,000 lbs trailer.
With all of the pluses that you get from weight distributing hitches, especially the ones with integrated sway control, it's a no brainer. A 1 ton can benefit from a WDH even if it's not required.
