For true weight go to a truck scale. Place just the trailer wheels on the scale. Record trailer wheel weight. Lower the trailer jack to the scale and raise the tongue until the load is off the tow vehicle hitch. Record total trailer weight. Tongue weight = total trailer weight - trailer wheel weight.
Rule of thumb is for tongue weight to between 10% and 15% of total trailer weight.
You need to do this when the trailer is loaded up in its traveling condition.
