Hitch weight?

I am in learning fact finding mode. Shopping used and in no hurry. Though I have issues thinking hitch weight. My 2016 Ram Crew toeing capacity 10,200. Cargo 1333. Just me and my wife in truck maybe a small cooler, everything else in TT.
The trailers I like at this time:
2018 202RD 25ft length GVWR 6000# hitch 471#
2014 Passport 25ft GVWR 5440# hitch 495#
My/our favorite:
2016 Jayco WH series M-24rks 29 ft. GVWR 6500# hitch 600#

I plan to use a Weight Distrubution hitch. With that said. What issues am I looking at having a TT with 500 to 600 hitch weight.

I am expierenced pulling boats and pst TT upto 27 ft. Just looking for pros and cons of these set ups, before buying? Mostly flat lands of Florida.

Thanks Tomm
  • I think any of those trailers would be a fine match for your truck.
  • It is my experience that the advertised tongue weight of any given trailer will increase by about 300# or more once it is loaded for camping and actually weighed. That being said, I think any of the trailers you mentioned will work with your tow vehicle.

    ALL great advice, EXCEPT:
Factory tongue weight DOES include full propane tanks according to makers' literature. Batteries, no, propane, yes.
True on newer TTs. It wasn't always this way though.
  • I’m sure some people will have more info but I’ve always found part of the weak link on half ton trucks are the tires. If you have P- rated tires you may want to consider upping the tire capacity to help with the borderline payload.
    Have fun shopping!

Almost any truck and tire will 'move' a trailer, but it takes more to enjoy the tow.
In my experience, P rated tires aren't great for towing campers.
Great for small utility trailers, great for mid sized boats.

E rated tires on your truck will make towing easier. Less Bounce, Less Sway, Easier in curves.
E rated tires and airbags are even better.
  • Great info, thanks a lot. I passed on the TT listed at beginning of thread. But, aleast it was due to me being informed. I continue to shop, and will be asking more questions in the future. Thanks to all the PM’s too.
The truck I plan to pull the TT is my wife’s,Ram. I hope she can tell the difference in E’s. She will need new tires shortly, glad I did not replace the P’s with P’s. Thanks
