There was also a company that sold campers made for flatbed trucks like the F-550 and where removable. One was 14 feet long on the flat section, with a generous cabover section too!
Fred,

http://xpcamper.com/versions/v1-full-size/ - Golden_HVACExplorerI have a similar "Wish List" that I could have a chassis mount type of camper, except for the lift off part.
Host sold campers with a optional Honda water cooled generator. My guess is the gasoline tank was someplace inside the camper. Someone makes a 6 gallon gasoline tank that is round and shaped like a 5 gallon propane tank! Yet very expensive, it matches the look of the trailer mounted propane tanks.
I think that Four Winds sells a F-550 based chassis mount motorhome with available 4 wheel drive and diesel engine up front! However the generator is propane, and the cargo rating is not all that high, even with the 19,500 GVWR. They do have adequate fresh and sewage tanks though. .

I wish some builder would do a really nice one of these "Chassis mounts" today based on ship style interior, not yacht style with phoo phoo but practicle stuff, rounded corners, good sinks, good heads/showers etc. I know go buy an earthromer...not acceptable...there needs to be something in between that uses all the ideas that we TC'rs have...and add to our units, 4 batteries, solar, two types of heat systems, silent effective gensets,on demand hot water, good suspension systems... and make the unit a lift off like a TC...you get the drift! Stout, practicle, no googaws. HUMMM any one want to start a company? I need something else to do. :>)
You mean the one with high performance insulation, radiant heated floor and bed platform, heat recovery ventilation, tanks inside the heated envelope, window insulating blind systems, LED lighting....
optional diesel appliances that quick connect to the truck fuel tank... - pjay9ExplorerI wish some builder would do a really nice one of these "Chassis mounts" today based on ship style interior, not yacht style with phoo phoo but practicle stuff, rounded corners, good sinks, good heads/showers etc. The OP's photo reminded me of an old camper we owned when the kids were young.
This was a 1969 Chinook camper ... called a "chassis mount" truck camper back then. No tag axle for the GMC 3500 dually truck it was built on. Today I guess it might be called a Class C motorhome:
My parents rented one of these Chassis mount RV's from a place in Santa Ana CA back in 1970, and we drove it to Arkansas, to visit my grandmother. I recall it was on a Chevy chassis too, just like this picture. Funny thing, the second battery was mounted under the seat, and somehow started sparking! Yes under the passenger side of the front seat!
And from this picture, the standard fuel tank at that time was a cab mounted 18 gallon tank behind the drivers seat. They even had a gas cap that when the pickups tipped on their sides, would either unscrew, or could get ripped off by sliding along the roadway, and start leaking and sparking! By 1975, the manufactures had to have recessed fuel caps, and covers over them to prevent this type of fire. Also I think that 1974 was the last year of the in cab fuel tank! Many owners started installing below the frame mounted fuel tanks, and took out the in the cab ones.. .
Lots of room inside that RV!
