I actually questioned
why it was different when basic physics says it shouldn't be. Sorry if you don't like to get technical but some of us do. I did a little reading in the meantime to educate myself and several sites said there actually isn't a difference from a heat generation/dissipation point. The reason hard braking and releasing works better is because brakes at each wheel are not all balanced. Not all wheel brakes respond the same and under light braking the differences can be the highest. This means the braking load isn't shared equally among the wheels or between the tow vehicle and trailer for that matter. The heavier you brake, the more they tend to balance. The stuff I found online pertained more to air brakes but the same can be true of a car & trailer and makes perfect sense to me. ;)
