How 2 Childproof pack and play door

Have trailer in signature. It has a pack and playrear door to load bikes, etc into the trailer for travel that opens to the lower bunk. I will have my 2.5 yr old ther and need to lock out the deadbolt toggle on the inside so he doesnt decide to crawl out and terrorize the campground in the middle of the night...anybody have an idea for a lockout mechanism or some way to disable the Interior handle?

I'm fairly handy and was thinking of a wood cover that slides behing and over and is secured in place with a pin so it cant be removed, but wanted to see if anybody else had some ideas.

I have a 2010 Dutchmen with the Pack-n-Play door as well. With my little ones, I had the same concerns. Here is what I did.

I purchased a new lock, with deadbolt, the same as the main entry door. I installed this and removed the red lever from the inside. Now the deadbolt can only be locked/unlocked with the key outside. If I need to open in from the inside, the red lever was up in the medicine cabinet. The emergency exit in the rear of my trailer is through the window at the top bunk. We did run a drill where the kids got to climb out of each of the emergency exits (except my youngest). Now my kids are a bit older, I re-attached the lever last year. In total, this cost me $35.00.

By the way, have you checked to see if your locks are part of the recall? This affected the combo locks, handle & deadbolt. When I sent my info in for the recall, I requested all four cores be keyed the same.

FINALLY! An idea, thank you. Also have to check the recall and see if I can get the key out at9 oclock position as i dont have the numbers noted.

Yep, 2 year olds listen for about 5 seconds and have very bad short term memory.
  • As noted an alarm would be best. One thing I do as well is not lock the door handle only use the deadbolt. In an emergency, if I can't get to the bunks from inside I can break the window from the outside and unlock the deadbolt through the window and open the door to get the kids out.
  • Alarm = 2.5 year old falling out of the trailer 3-5 feet likely on his head with heavy injury potential including death as he moves that fast. A defeatable 2ndary system is required that isnt a big red handle for him to play with. This kid can unlock a house deadbolt and open a door without blinking. Plus in a emergency unless im there with the kid he wont know what to do and if it's defeated I or my wife can kick through with ease.
  • I would not want to disable an Emergency exit. I would want an alarm if it was opened.
  • Good question. We also have a DGD about that age, but she is still in the other Pack and Play so can't reach the door yet. I better look into it. As it is also an emergency exit..... something to think about.
