- We both still work so it’s usually as long as it takes. This past Christmas we drove 14 hrs straight to take our son in law home to Austin, he drove 1/2 the time. I try to keep it at 6 hrs or less most of the time though.
- buckyExplorer II"The other side of a populated area to avoid the AM rush hour"
How true that is and has been a rule for several years since retirement. We got burned in Nashville headed west one day, never again. Thanks for reminding me. - ssthrdExplorerWe usually get up in the morning and leave when we are ready. Usually anywhere from 9 to 10 AM. I like to drive until 3 or so, and try to be on the other side of any populated area so we don't have to deal with a rush hour in the morning.
- wowens79Explorer IIIWe still work, so we will push to get somewhere depending on time and what is between home and final destination. We did Marathon FL (Keys) to ATL in one day it was 850-900 miles. Left at 8am, and got home at 2am, we took a couple of extended stops to walk around a bit, and there was a wrench that had us stopped for 2 hrs. That was too much for one day. They next time we split it up.

Not retired.....as long as it takes----time is of the essence
similar for us. there are occasions where we have done 400 or so in 1 day, but only when we are going to then stay for days/weeks.
Like to leave around 9ish in the morning, be parked by 3ish, 4 at the latest, relax have a nice happy hour and dinner.
But we are retired so have more flexibility. - Nv_GuyExplorer IIIDepending where we need to be, it varies from 6-8 hours, 350-450 miles per day. One variable is how long we stop for lunch. Stopping time is always no later than 4 PM, so we have ample time to get settled before dinner.
- About 6 hours in the saddle is enough for me.... unless I really need to get someplace.
- afidelExplorer III've done >13 hours before, wanted to get south of Atlanta the first day from NE Ohio. I've learned that that is anti-vacation mode so now I try to keep it under 400 miles a day, unfortunately that can still be a long day if traffic doesn't cooperate.
- BB_TXNomadHave done 10 to 12 when we were still working. But dropped that to 8 or, preferably, less now. 5-6 is better.
- agesilausExplorer IIIDepends on your time frame, fulltimers 150-250 miles. Folks with limited time it can be much more. Before retiring we would do 400 miles plus on vacation for the initial drive to our intended vacation area.
And yes this is an often discussed subject, lots of thread but it boils down to what I set out.
