How many miles for a used diesel truck?

It took me a good year to find my 06 2500HD Sierra D/A . It now has 150 thousand miles and still looks and runs great. I have three guys that want it.Be patent and you will fine what you want.

Just remember. The engines and transmissions in most truck now will run many many miles, but the power steering, AC compressors, alternators, water pumps, seats(wear through) etc. are the same as they are on ALL trucks and most of that stuff will fail eventually and probably before the engine. That stuff can get expensive too.

I hate to agree with the avoidance of the Ford 6.0 but I agree. I own a 7.3 diesel powered Ford which is a much better choice

Can't speak for the Ford, but if you find a Cummins with 250k miles on it, you can easily get another 250k out of it if its been maintained well and you continue the treatment.

It hard to find a nice used HD diesel truck that has been taken care of since the beginning. They're built for work and that's what most of them have been used for. I have one but I raised it from a pup and it's had a soft life. I ended up buying new because everything I found was trashed and I knew I would keep the rig a long time. I plan on getting another 10 years out of it.

Do your homework. Older diesels had really long lives, however since the high pressure injection systems came along it's not at all unusual to see people replacing injectors before 200k, even in well maintained trucks.

I was doing the same about year and a half ago. Brand new Ram 3500 with the Cummins was $38,000 and I decided that was more than I wanted to spend.

I didn't want to get something that was completely worn out and beat up which was all I could find locally are Detroit.

Poked around cars.com, ebay, and other sites for about a month looking at low mileage trucks (less than 75,000 miles). I couldn't find a GM product in my price range and the Rams all seemed to be rusting through at the rear wheel wells.

I found my F350 with 56,000 miles in Texas for $25,000. The dealer paid for my airline ticket and even picked me up at the airport.

Even though it's the horrible-worst-engine-ever-built-it's-gonna-blow-up-any-minute-now Ford 6.0, I've been very happy with it.

Yeah just stay away from the Ford 6.0 or 6.4 motors. Any of the diesels can go well over 300k but the rest of the truck may be pretty much shot at that point depending on how it was taken care of and used.

You really just need to get out and look over a lot of them and you'll get a good idea of the difference between a truck that has been cared for vs one that has not regardless of mileage.

6.0L ford? Nope
Cummins? Cummins is a 500K motor so anything less is fine.

That price range should be good for up to an 05 to 07 maybe. We bought use we were looking a little older, and looked at several with 150 to 175, that were in rough shape. Read a listing from a local Ram dealer with an 01 one owner, with 234!
It was the best looking and running unit we has seen, we bought it on the spot!
That was four years ago and we are now at 276,000 miles and still pulling our 11,000# 5er at a GCVW of 19,000 to 19,500# very well.
