If buying used, the trucks to look for are not the ones used to tow frequently but the ones someone buys to look cool driving to the office every day. You'd be surprised how many of these there are.
Best way to tell if it's been used to tow is 1) no fifth wheel or gooseneck in the bed, and no holes indicating one used to be there and 2) original paint still on the inside of the receiver hitch.
Also, a plow mount or evidence of one is an instant disqualification for me. Nothing beats on a drive train like plowing snow, and you can do a TON of plowing and still have a relatively low mileage truck.
