Two thoughts for you:
1) You need to keep your eye on the payload if you are going with a diesel 2500 rig and want to tow a fifth wheel. My buddies 2012 Chevy 2500 diesel had a low payload number that would not handle a fifth wheel. That was his, not all, Chevy 2500s. Consider what the weight of the trailer and your gear will be and ensure whatever truck you get has enough payload. Check the sticker on the driver door for the numbers. You may want to look at 3500 if you must have a diesel.
2) Is diesel a requirement? 30k is a good piece of change but will get you close to a new rig. Consider the value of the warranty if you go new. If you are financing the truck you may find better rates on a new rig. Just as an example of a new 2500:
Ram 2500 Crew Cab Tradesman with 6.4L for $35K
With that said nothing is better than scoring a good deal on the right used rig. If you are patient and shop around you may find just what you want.
Good luck,
Stu
