How often should I change fuel filters?

I changed my fuel filters last November and only put 4200 miles on my truck this year. 2006 F350 6.0 PSD. Do I need to change my fuel filters this year of wait another year? I will be changing the oil and filter along with the coolant filter next weekend, just checking on fbe fuel filter. Thanks everyone.

  • From memory, I think Ford revised their manual for that engine and now requires every 5000 miles for the 6.0 liter...had one and did it all the time. Check one of the Powerstroke websites. That engine is very troublesome.

I don't change mine unless they plug and I start to experience low power. Some of my diesels haven't seen a filter change in many years. You can put a new filter on an engine and have it plug with one bad tank of fuel. If you never get a bad tank of fuel you might never need to change the filter. My way of thinking says changing the fuel filter once per year makes as much sense as changing tires once a year. I could see changing it every 5000 gallons of fuel.
  • I change mine EVERY November weather it needs it or not (lol). Fuel filters are cheap compared to fuel system related repairs.

The company I drove for had new fuel filters installed on the entire fleet in late fall regardless of service intervals, we had no issues with freeze ups, I figure it worked for them, it'll work for me. So far so good.

  • Run some Power Service Fuel Suplement White Bottle in with your fuel, a good dose, maybe 10 fl oz to a full tank, every fall, before first freeze sets in. Do it again in January, and again in March. Should keep your fuel in good condition, dry and not clog filters with frozen moisture.

  • I have a 2005 6.0. With that few of miles since the last change, I wouldn't worry about it. You did change both the frame and engine filter last time, right?

  • Fuel filters are cheap when you look at what they protect...your injectors at about $500.00 each (for my Dodge, maybe Ford injectors are cheaper)....I change my fuel filter at every oil change.

  • I have a friend who owns a dodge deskill and he changed his every year. and I think he puts less miles on his than you did.
