I'm with rhagfo. Evaporated odors and oil smoke from the engine compartment seem to leak right out of the rear of the hood and directly into the the cabin air intake. Besides the firewall noise blanket, the hood liner could also be soaked. And all this is even worse if a firewall pass-through is not properly sealed.
Compared to gas, fuel takes a long time to evaporate unless heat hurries it along. Might pay to thoroughly wash the engine bay unless there is a known under-hood moisture fault with the model.
