I have an older 7' Coachmen on a Ford Ranger and It does ok for short weekend trips. The smaller wheelbase and width is a bit unsettling when it's windy out. For us it works, but if our camping habits were to change we would need a bigger truck.
Look at your needs, if you have good camping areas that are close by, a smaller truck and camper may work. If your going to be going hauling off to the other side of the country get a real truck.
I searched and saved for 14 months before I pulled the trigger on a rig. Do your homework and take your time, it will pay off in the end.
