Always best to do this jacking while it's still hooked to the tow vehicle, but the OP has said they don't want to do that, so it's going to be dicey.
Good point--safety above all! I hope the OP has/knows what wheel chocks are.
This situation, of a man in the USA never having used a jack, is a first for me. Although, I've encountered other "firsts" with folks so it isn't a cataclysmic event. I wonder how many folks there are, now-a-days, that have never handled a manual transmission. :@
