Hunting for pictures of old Caveman Camper Steel Frames

Hey all, as I prep to do some major overhaul work on my 40 year old camper, I've been contemplating how I want to rebuild some of the key structural areas (Corner Jack mounts), and I remembered that Caveman Campers was the only line, that I can recall, that used steel frames.

Does anyone have any pictures of a Caveman Camper with it's siding off that I could use for reference?

I'm likely going to go for a hybrid design of wood and steel, but having some pictures of a period unit to use for guidance would be greatly appreciated :).

Do you need another Caveman camper? I think this is a 1968. It is so nice inside but the outside has a rear corner with the siding coming loose and the wood below is rotting. I hate to see it falling apart. I don't believe it leaks because the ceiling is so nice. I can get some pictures if you are interested.

Actually, I have a KIT, I'm replacing some of the wooden structure with steel where there's more critical structural connections, in this case, the jacks, wings, floor.

Matt you know, anything you engineer is going to be way better anyhow. So don't worry about those long gone pics or plans. I suggest drawing up your own plan but remember gussets for stress points.

Isn't aluminum a bit better in a way since it allows for some flexing before it snaps a weld? I really don't know but still like steel for many reasons.

I thought about aluminum, but it would cost more in materials and welding than steel.

The camper is still going be majority wood, but the corners and cabover structure are going to be rebuilt and framed in steel to help stiffen the structure up a little, given its One-By framing and 40 years of fighting gravity.

My hope with the Caveman's is to see how they did the corner jack mount design to see if there was anything that I might discover that would be useful :).

  • Just curious... You plan to use steel instead of aluminum?

Other than that, no helpful info to offer. I'm just intrigued when folks tear into these older rigs. Good luck!
