Husky Sway Control adjustment

A Husky Sway Control came with our used travel trailer, and the instructions leave a lot of unanswered questions .... or maybe I'm just overthinking it.

Anyway ....
The instructions just say to "tighten firmly until the handle is parallel with the main body." How tight is it supposed to be? The first time we used it, I heard a great groan of protest every time I made a turn. I loosened it one full turn to get it parallel again but looser, and I'd be surprised if it's doing anything at all.

I asked at Camper World last time we were out there, and the tech just said to tighten it down, and he showed me and put some pretty serious torque on it by hand. I drove it off the lot, and it protested loudly, so I stopped and loosened it again.

We've never had a problem even without it installed at all, but we've got it and would like to use it -- just in case.
  • Thanks, Gordon. That's very helpful. I think I could run it a little tighter.

We do pack that way Buzzard. We can't even get to the back until the slide-out is out, so everything extra we carry goes either into the back of the truck or in front of the axles.

I know which nut you mean, old guy. I think we're OK in that regard.

    Thanks for the help folks.
  • there is a nut on the bottom you can loosen just a little and the moaning will stop.
  • If you make sure most of the heavy stuff in the TT is at the front, you probably won't need the sway bar.

  • I turn mine with one finger, tightening until I get a little resistance, and then another 1/4 turn or so past that. don't be heavy handed with it.

it's not supposed to be a rigid linkage, the purpose is to "burn off" or dissipate energy that would otherwise cause swaying.

make sure you take it off before backing up
