There should be 2 stickers on the drivers door - the white one with the GVWR is usually on the end of the door - the one with yellow on it is tire and loading stick with the payload on it. It is usually on the body - lower right corner when you have the drivers door open. The payload number is most important for the discussion at this point.
RV Salesmen are notorious for using "max tow capacity" to shove units out the door so it doesn't surprise me that you were told you'd be fine. It's unfortunate that "max tow capacity" figures are used the way they are.
They'll claim up and down you're tow vehicle can do it, and then they make you sign a waiver saying that they don't know anything about tow vehicles.
