I have heard really good things about the 8.1 burb. In the early 2000's I read it actually out pulled the duramax. The years following they detuned the 8.1 and increased power on the duramax. Only problem with the 8.1 that I have heard is they burn a lot of oil. But I guess thats just the nature of the big block.
