If you were buying a new tow vehicle tomorrow...

...and had a reasonable budget to do it with, what would you buy for towing a:

A) 9000# TT

B) 13000# 5er

Assume weights are wet/loaded.

Pick any brand/engine/gears you like.

I'll start...

A) 2014 Ram 3500 SRW 6.4L Hemi/4.10
B) 2014 Ram 3500 DRW 6.7L Cummins/3.73 or 4.10

ON EDIT: Maybe I wasn't clear. Those are my choices for the trailers A and B. What would you choose for towing trailer A, and what would you choose for towing the 5er in "B"?

  • 2014 Ford F350 - Would be the only towing vehicle in my repertoire!

If "reasonable" budget allows for brand new, then I'm pretty much copying off ib516's paper. The only difference is, for A), if the rear air suspension is only available on a Ram 2500 (not 3500) then I'd go that route; for B) I'm taking the '14 CTD with 4.10 gearing.

Now, if reasonable budget is considered to be late-model used (but not new) my answers change.

    A) 2010 F350 SRW CC 4x4 V10 4.30 gears
    B) 2011 GMC Denali DMax CC 4x4 DRW
  • New truck tomorrow?
I'm a GM guy, you appear to be a Ram guy...but, new truck tomorrow at today's new truck prices - I'm not going to be dead set on brand loyalty.

I would be starting from scratch and looking at all three. If I go GM again, so be it, but I would go in OPEN MINDED.
  • This has the potential to spiral out of control. If I was buying new I would consider any of the 3/4 or 1 ton trucks out there. I would consider the 3/4 ton becuase you never know what kind of deal you might be able to get.

Dually for these weights is WAAAAAAAY overkill in my opinion and just costs a lot more in tires and makes it that more interesting to park.
  • If you aren't planning on ever going over those weights, you won't need to purchase a Dually.
  • A diesel from any of the big three AMERICAN manufacturers. Pick a style you like, and go for it. They're all great trucks. I would suggest test driving all three. I found it useful to let all the salesmen know I was considering other branded pickups. It made them much more competetive. It works real well when you tell the Dodge salesman "I'll have to let you know tomorrow after I drive the Ford and the Chevy".
  • Neither...I'd search for a good used pre-emission 2006 or older 7.3 Ford, 5.9 Dodge, or D/A GM 1 ton CC DRW diesel. Good luck.

Happy camping!!! See y'all down teh road!!!:)
