"Import" in full sized truck?

Hey everyone. First post, new to the truck camper world (still camper-less at this point).

I'm looking to add a truck camper to my fleet of toys. I really enjoy fishing and like to get out on a number of trips each year. Up to this point I've either been tenting it, sleeping in my boat with the full top up or sleeping in the back seat of my truck. I live in Saskatchewan and prefer early and late season fishing, which means my present accommodations haven't been all that comfortable. I also like the idea of mobility, being able to go from one lake to the next without the added driving back to a camp site or having to set up camp somewhere new every day. A truck camper seems like an obvious choice.

My present truck is a 2004 z71. Payload rating is 1569 Lbs. Boat is a 2013 Crestliner Fish Hawk 1650WT. At this point I'm not entirely certain what the trailer tongue weight is, but I'd guess in the 200 Lbs range. The truck has been very good to me, as reliable as I could ask it to be over the last 8 years and at this point I've love to stick with it rather than upgrade. I intend on adding air bags to my rear suspension, but obviously weight is a limiting factor for a camper. And to make matters worse, I want a hard side and not a pop-up as I think condensation would likely be a constant battle in the near-freezing temperatures I regularly encounter.

Going with a minimalist, sub-8' camper would likely get me in the ideal weight range. Basically, most "import" campers are pretty much what would be ideal for me. I've noticed some manufacturers list the campers in that category as being too small for a regular sized pickup, some don't. I'm curious as to what the limiting factors are? I would imagine box height and box to cab roof height play some part. Could one not build a spacer platform to raise it up if needed?

I'm hoping I can stick to a used unit, but prospects are pretty hard to come by in this area and it might come down to having to get whatever I buy shipped to me sight unseen. So I want to be sure of what will or will not work for me.

I've found a used unit, an '03 6.5' built by Sundowner in Calgary. Not a big company so there is next to no information about their products online. It looks to be sitting in the back of a Colorado or Canyon without a whole lot of room between the camper and the roof of the truck, which is what got me wondering if such a thing would work in my truck or not.

Thanks in advance for any insight.
  • Sorry, for some reason I was thinking all z71 were 1/2 models. But yes, it's a 1500 series.

The camper I'm interested in is only 600 pounds. The truck should handle that just fine.

Upgrading to a larger truck and camper would be an unnecessary luxury in my opinion. Simply having somewhere warm and dry to sleep with somewhere to make a meal would be a heck of an upgrade over my present situation. I typically fish alone with just the company of my dog. Sometimes my dad tags along as well, so a small unit with 2 beds will be plenty.

Thanks for the input so far everyone. I'll look into the width and see how it compares to the truck.
  • You have a 1500 series truck?

It does little to let us all know it is a Z71 or something, or Silverado. The Silverado chrome package comes in everything from 1500 truck to a dually crewcab.

Your truck is to small to carry a decent size camper. You should be looking at a 1 ton 3500 series truck. Stick with gas to save up front costs, and lower maintenance, such as avoiding the diesel truck 10 quart (I don't know for sure) $150 oil and fuel filter changes.

Then you can look for a comfortable camper, with a 'wet bath' where the shower drains into the same floorpan as the toilet is mounted on, and the toilet gets wet during a shower.

You can take along a furnace, stove, oven with broiler, kitchen sink! and hot running water - even if limited to only about 20 gallons of fresh water.

And two queen size beds (once the dinette is converted).

    Good luck!

    Fred.
  • You can definitely put a small camper on a full size truck. Many years ago, I purchased a truck camper for my 4 x 4 Toyota. It was a load for the Toyota but I managed okay with overload springs. When our first child was born I purchased a full size 3/4 ton Ford supercab. It was real tight backing under the camper to load/unload. but I was able to do it. I built a "pad" out of plywood and 2x6 lumber in order to have the overhang clear the cab. I made the pad in such a way that I could utilize that space for additional storage (mostly long narrow items, like fishing rods, paddles, or something folded like a tarp). Since we preferred to cook outside, I made a long narrow table that I could attach to the camper jacks and carried it beside the camper, in the box of the truck when travelling.

I do not recall the exact weight of the camper but I think any 1/2 ton truck would handle the weight of a camper designed for an import. Make sure the jacks are far enough apart for you to be able to back your truck under the camper. You may have to purchase/make extensions.

Hope this helps in some way.
  • Almost everyone uses a platform of some kind. You'll want to keep the camper weight to around 800 dry. I don't know why a smaller camper would not work in a full size truck unless they are just not wide enough for the tie downs to clear the fenders. That would be the key measurement.
