Importance of Camper Package on new DRW truck

I am looking for a truck and often find one with exactly what I want but missing the camper package or heavy front suspension option. I am looking mainly at F450's but might go F350 if the price is right. TC will be a low 4k wet weight. Is it a bad idea to just get one without the extra stuff the camper package adds?
  • The 5th wheel hitch prep package adds the 7 pin plug in the bed. That is one option I do require.

Since my camper takes the weight off front axle, they did not offer option for thinner sway bar and I declined the option.

What does the weight of the front axle have to do with the need for a front anti-sway bar? Those are unrelated.
  • I have had 3 F250's since 1999, with the camper package on all. With the weight of all campers, for a 250, I think, the camper package stiffer front springs is pretty vital for better control and adds a rear stabilizer. For a 350 or 450, if it is available, it is a fairly cheap accessory package, and also contains the 7 pin plug and associated relay in the under hood elec. box for charging. I would not assume that the front springs were beefed up, unless I had that in writing. I'd rather have stiffer, stronger suspension than take a chance on needing more. Bouncing bad! Adding a Hillwig rear stabilizer bar costs A LOT of $ if you add it on later.
  • Ford usually automatically chooses the front spring pack and often times it might actually be on the truck because of this. With F350/450 DRW this is probably the case as apposed to SRW trucks.
  • The Camper Package varies between trucks. My F250 got heavier front springs, rear overload springs and a rear stabilizer bar. The same F350 SRW already had the rear overload springs and a F350 DRW already had the rear overload springs and rear stabilizer bar.

Unless you you plan to hang something off the front bumper you really do not need heavier front springs although it will reduce some porpoising front to rear. If I was purchasing a DRW, I would most likely use aftermarket add-ons after evaluating stock ride and add the snow plow package if I planned to haul a heavy front basket, bumper or winch.
