Another vote for a Tacoma -- ours is 4 door, short bed, 4x4. But if you don't get a WD, be sure to get a sway bar, at least. That is what we use with our little trailer, and it works.
By the way, if your Tacoma is your daily driver, and you put something like BFG Rugged Terrain tires, you can get about 21 mpg under good conditions. With my new BFG All Terrains, I am now getting a little less than 20 mpg.
When towing, it's 10 mpg, of course.
