Just a thought -- yes, a big big truck is always better for towing. But life is a series of compromises. A moderate truck that is sufficient to do the job will also get better "daily driver" mileage. Not everyone is wealthy -- if you do a lot of commuting with a truck, there is a big dollar difference between 20 mpg and 15 mgp. Yes, gas is cheaper now than it has been. But as we know, it will go back up.
If you are wealthy, just get the biggest truck you can, and forget mpg.
