Not true. It all depends on model and cab configuration, but Rams have the lowest payloads in the segment. Yes even lower than the Tundra.
If it's just the 2 of you and you want an 8' box then a regular cab truck may work and will get you more payload, although tougher to find. The Tundra regular cab can have in excess of 2k payload.
I do agree that a 2500, if you can swing it, would give you more wiggle room and options.
Japanese pickups have smaller payloads than one of the big three so avoid those. Even newer Japanese trucks might only have a 1300 pound payload.
