installing a trailer electric jack?

would like to get a trailer electric jack. have the 3 holes on a A frame and looking at a 3500lb jack. my trailer only weighs 3300lbs.
my question is when installing do u just connect a red wire to the positive terminal of the battery and the black wire to the neg terminal and thats it? any other recommendations or thoughts? I see them on ebay for about 95.00 for one like this.
electric jack

thanks
  • thanks to all. some great answers and advise. thank u all again.
  • 3500 lbs is the way to go because you end up raising the rear of your TV also to hookup. I've owned 4 different name brands and find the Barker VIP 3500, and the Atwood HD 3500 the best and most reliable (had failures on my Husky and Ultrafab)
be sure to buy the correct tube size (2" or 2 1/4")

    electric jack

    thanks

When I first started my search for a tongue jack, I was amazed at the cost difference being anywhere from $100 -$400 or so. Yes, I wanted something that would work, but?
After doing extensive searches, I found one with outstanding customer reviews & within a price range that was acceptable.

First of all, do yourself a favor & if your purchasing online, pay attention to the customer reviews, I did, & it paid off. :W

THIS ONE was my final choice & is currently selling on Amazon for $120 delivered to your door, if you have "prime". Installation was a breeze, connect positive directly to the battery, utilizing the inline circuit breaker & that's it. The negative or ground is the Jack itself as bolted to the frame. There are two switches, one operates the light & the other toggle operates up / down function. Get it in Black or White, includes, emergency crank, & head cover.
PS: I ordered it on a Monday at noon, it was on my doorstep the next day at noon.:B

    3650# - 2 1/4" tube - 18" travel
  • Says its internally grounded in the directions. Grind off the powder coat at mounting point.

Recommend a cover of some sort to keep water out of it. Enjoy!!
  • Here is a 3,000 lb UltraFab from Mantelli RV which looks like the one you had. I had them do warrenty on mine and they were great.

You may not need the service but if you do it is priceless. The cost is only $10 more.
  • Don't forget the fuse! I think most of the jacks come with a fuse holder on the positive, enough wire to bolt to the frame for negative and a set of instructions.

If it was me, I'd spend a few shekels more and at least get one with a brand name on it. Some of the jack mfg's are real good about warranties and supplying parts if they break. That E Bay jack won't have anything like that.
  • It is usually 1 wire to positive on battery, and they usually ground through a mounting bolt.
