Hey, I'm thinking of sticking a nice chunk of insulation foam inside my camper windows. Half of them have a 1-2 inch gap between the window and screen. After searching the web I haven't found anyone else doing this and am very curious why. Maybe there's a reason not to do it that I'm not seeing?I notice that reflectix seems to be the go-to solution for window insulation. From what I gather it's claim to fame is that the material reflects heat back so I'm guessing it would be good to have inside with a blackened material on the outside to promote the absorption of heat. I have a feeling that it would be more suitable for reflecting the sun than keeping heat from a conventional heater inside. Anyones 1 or 2 cents about this is appreciated!

While foam board would work, I think Reflectix has insulating qualites besides reflecting heat. The air bubbles make good insulation, and helps to retain heat. My heated basement is insulated with Reflectix under the corroplast, and all my floor undersides also. Another thought, Reflectix is easy to work with, and waterproof.Jerry

Check Wal-mart or other big box store for the shrinkable plastic storm window kits. Double sided tape that you put around the interior frame, stretch the clear plastic over it then shrink until tight with hair dryer. They do work well then come spring peel of and discard. You can also see through it as it is clear.

Reflectix is used for both keeping cold out and heat in, as well as heat out, for winter and summer uses. It's especially popular with tent trailer campers as we are finding out since we just got a pop-up trailer to take to remote sites.

I made 11 inside storm windows from 1/8" Lexan for a 30' 5th wheel trailer with a 13' slide out.
They stand up nicely in the across the front bedroom closet.
They overlapped the inside window opening about 1" all around. I added 1/2" thick X 1" wide insulating foam with a self stick on one side. No drafty cold camper anymore or sweating/dripping windows.
We ran 2 dehumidifiers that took care of a huge moisture problem.

One problem with the foam boards is where do you store them when not in use, especially when travelling?

You can only put so many under your mattress.

A piece of extruded foam insulation board cut to friction fit in the window will give you a good insulation result. We used that system extensively when deer hunting near the US-Canada border. Mercury fell to -15f some nights so we were glad we had done that. In the daytime, we pulled a couple of the foam boards for light and to be able to see outside.

I used the styrofoam panels with the aluminum on one side. 1" thick. Cut to press-fit into the window openings. After trimmed, I wrapped the cut board with ducttape to keep the little foam pellets from getting rubbed loose and making a mess.

You can solve the condensation issue with a dehumidifier.

Those plastic kits are great, I did something similar last year. But I'm looking to kick it up a knotch this winter. Maybe I'll use foam board and reflectix on the inside, hoping that the reflectix helps with the condensation and helps the insulation as well.
