Interior Repair - '07 Jayco 23B Rear Bunk

Went camping this weekend and was surpised to find water in the rear bunk when I opened it; not sure at this point how water got in there, but I suspect it happend during a particualrly heavy rain we had with some driving winds. The results were some mold on the inside and outside of the tent-end fabric and water damage to the board that runs along the inside edge of the bunk deck, adjacent to and inside of the bunk deck hinges.

I was able to clean up the mold fairly easily, but I had to rip out the damaged board. This was a particle board the end that had water on it swelled, discolored badly, and essentially disintegrated when I removed it.

I am replacing it with a solid wood board that I will stain to match the other interor wood and will coat with polyurethane to hopefully protect it from future water damage.

I wish Jayco had used better material in the first place...oh well.

I would like to replace the perimeter seal of the bunk, any suggestions on some sources for these?

Thanks.

  • That seems like the initial approach Jayco is wanting me to take - they're offering an adhesive gasket that I presume would go on the bunk flange...for $2.50/ linear foot. I've asked them to look into a replacement for the white gasket that is clamped to the side of the camper. I'm still waiting on their response...
  • My rear bunk on our 232, seemed to leak fairly frequently. Dealer did nothing to try and fix it. I added a second seal to the edge of the bunk door and it has not leaked since.
  • Why don't you just order it from Jayco. If any updated designs have been done, you'll get the better seal or seal system.

Surprised that no one else jumped into the thread. Your story use to be the norm for Hybrids. You use to see stories and pics of leaking bunk doors all the time on this forum a few years ago. That's why I always stuck with Pop Ups or Travel Trailers. I remember the 2 big brands for leaking bunk doors were Jayco Jay Feather and Forest River Roos. If I remember correctly, they both came out with revised sealing systems to lessen the damage. I remember one Roo thread where all the wood was warped and destroyed and the owner replaced it all. Had detailed pics of this but it was years ago.

Good luck in getting your bunks sealed good.
