Well, your questions have been pretty well covered already, many good points for sure. As for features that I think are very nice, besides the AC and heat etc, is a slide. The extra real estate in the trailer is really appreciated , especially on those trips where mother nature isn't cooperating.
When I was in the market for a new hybrid about a year ago, I really liked the Coachmen Apex 17REX . If you want a nice big open area to give yourself an almost tentlike experience, as well as plenty of room for the weight, I don't think theres a better choice. The 17 REX has a queen bedroom suite at the rear which doesn't just open up like the normal hybrid bed like on the tongue end, but fully opens to the floor, creating an excellent screened room feel to it, and gives the little ones all kinds of room to play when inside without being in anybodies way. Hopefully this picture will show up : http://www.coachmenrv.com/products/apex.aspx?page=gallery or if not, you might want to take a peek at it online to better understand the queen suite I tried describing. google images of the 17REx to see a few photos as well. Im sure its under 4000 pounds, but I cant recall the weight offhand .
As for why we chose a different trailer (holiday Rambler Alumalite ultra 218Es)because it was bigger and my wife still seems to think we need a huge trailer, sigh.
